The name of Ainslie derives from the English Lords of Annesley in Nottinghamshire, who fled to the safety offered by Malcolm III with the invasion by William the Conqueror, and settled around Dolphinstone William de Ainslie, canon of Glasgow Cathedral, witnessed a charter by Walter, Bishop of Glasgow in 1208. Thomas de Ainlsie acted as a mediator between the monks of Kelso and the bishopric of Glasgow during a dispute in 1221. The Ragman Roll of 1296 lists both John de Aynesleye of Roxburghshire and Johan de Aynesley of Cruwfurt as supporters of Edward I. Robert de Ainslie, Baron of Dolphinstone and Patrick, Earl of Dubar and March, travelled on a six year crusade to the Holy Land from 1248. It is believed that The Laird of Dolphinstone who swore fealty to Edward I was Robert of Dolphinstone's son, John. The Ainslie opposition to Robert the Bruce meant the loss of their estates, However, the family gained favour again when William de Ainslie became associated with Robert II. The estates were returned to him in 1377. Born in 1766, Robert Ainslie became a companion to Robert Burns on his travels through the Borders following their acquaintance in 1787 in Edinburgh. A later visit to Burns at Ellisland yielded a copy of 'Tam O'Shanter', which Robert Ainslie presented to Sir Walter Scott. The Military exploits of the early Ainslies, in the Crusades, are echoed in the later high ranks of a number of kinsmen. General Charles de Ainslie commanded the 93rd Highland Regiment who were the 'Thin Red Line' at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. The Astley Ainslie Hospital in Edinburgh was built with the fortune of the lawyer David Ainslie of Costerton who died in 1900.
