Two possiblities exist as to the origin of this name, one that it derives from the French town in Pas de Calais of the same name, and the other, that it is an anglicisation of the Gealic 'Macbheatha'. The first record of the name in Scotland appears in 1165 when Robert de Betunia was a witnesss to a charter of lands near Tranent in East Lothian. It is believed that the first de Bethunes came across from France in 1066 with the Norman conquest. They also accompanied King Richard the Lion Heart on his Crusade to the Holy Land. The major family lands seem to have lain in Fife and Angus. Sir Robert de Bethune gave homage to Edward I in the Ragman roll of 1296. Robert de Bethune married the heiress to Sir John Balfour, and so gained control of the extensive Balfour lands, and became knwn as Bethune of Balfour. James Bethune became Archbishop of St Andrews and chancellor of Scotland, and his nephew David Bethune became first Abbot of Arbroath in 1523, and then cardinal in 1538. He set out on a campaign of persecution, determined to get rid of Protestant heretics. He sentenced George Wishart, the foremost preacher of the time, to death, and was subsequently killed in his castle of St Andrews in retaliation in 1546. Robert Bethune accompanied Mary Queen of Scots to France for her marriage to the French heir, and on her return in 1561, he became Master of the Royal Household and keeper of the Royal Palace at Falkland. The family developed many important alliances through marriage, including the Earls of Rothes, Glencairn, Lindsay, and Wemyss.. The Earls of Lindsay in Fife bear the name and arms Bethune despite their own distinguished ancestry.
