The name 'Boyd' has its origins in the Gaelic for 'fair' or 'yellow'. Robertus de Boyd is recorded witnessing a contract between the Lord of Eglinton and the burgh of Irvine c.1205. Robert de Boyd is listed in the Ragman Roll of 1296 pledging allegiance to Edward I of England. Duncan Boyd was a supporter of Bruce and served as one of his commanders during the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. James II allowed a peerage with the title 'Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock'. Lord Boyd was appointed regent to James III upon the death of his father, while his younger brother was military tutor to the King. Lord Boyd was appointed great Chamberlain. His son, Thomas, married Princess Mary, the King's sister, earning the title 'Earl of Arran'. However, Lord Boyd was also responsible for abducting the King and attaining an Act of Parliament appointing him sole governor of the crown. He arranged the marriage between the King and the Norwegian Princess, regaining the islands of Orkney and Shetland. The Boyds were seen as a threat in many circles and their enemies plotted against them. In 1469, Lord Boyd, his brother Alexander and the Earl of Arran were summoned to Edinburgh to justify their actions. Lord Boyd escaped to England while his brother, Alexander, was executed. The family was restored to its former status by Mary, Queen of Scots, who provided the title Lord Boyd. On Mary’s escape from Loch Leven Castle, Lord Boyd was one of the first to aid her. He visited her during her captivity in England and died in 1590. During the rising of 1715 the 3rd Earl who opposed the Stuart claim. His son, the 4th Earl, however, fought for Prince Charles who appointed him a general in the Privy Council. He was captured at Culloden, sent to the Tower of London and beheaded on Tower Hill on the 18th of August 1746. The present chief is the 7th Lord Kilmarnock.
