Clan Carmichaels have lived in upper Lanarkshire for almost eight hundred years, establishing them as one of the older clans of Scotland. The actual name Carmichael means 'Michael's fort'. The Carmichaels were close to Clan Douglas; the lands of Carmichael were from Douglasdale territory that the Douglases received from Robert the Bruce. Sir John was loyal to Clan Douglas and supported them during their bid for dominance in Scotland as well as aiding them during border raids into England. After extensive sections of Douglas territory were awarded to the Carmichaels, the power and influence of Sir John and the Carmichaels grew. One of the most prominent members of the clan is Sir John de Carmichael of Meadowflat, who later went on to become Sir John of Carmichael; he was part of the Scottish army that was sent to aid the French against an English invasion. Apparently, Sir John rode against the Duke of Clarence, who was a Knight of the Garter and brother of Henry V, and unhorsed him, breaking his spear. Lord Carmichael supported Charles I but his son, who Charles I knighted, turned against him and joined the Parliamentarian forces with his brother, Sir Daniel. He commanded the Clydesdale Regiment at Marston Moor in 1644 and at Philiphaugh in 1645 where he defeated the royalist forces. He fought against his brothers, Sir James Carmichael of Bonnytoun and Captain John Carmichael at Marston Moor and Sir James was killed in the battle. The 3rd Earl became known as the 'great Earl' and supported the Hanoverians while being an ambassador for George II. For a hundred and sixty three years the Carmichael-Anstruthers kept the Carmichael lands as their seat until Sir Windham Carmichael-Anstruther's death in 1980. The 11th Baronet is Richard Carmichael of Carmichael and is responsible for helping to promote of the clan society throughout the world.
