The Chalmers name derives from the position of 'chamberlain' to the king. It is believed that this in turn comes from Herbertus who was 'camerarius regis scotiae', which translates to Great Chamberlain of Scotland, from 1124 to 1153. He assumed the name of De Camera, following the acquisition of the barony of Gadgirth, in similar fashion to way the Great Stewards of Scotland assumed the the name of Stewart when they took the throne. The family of Herbertus held lands lands in Ayr and Lanarkshire, but the name of Chalmers is not restricted to these areas. Entirely separate families have developed in Aberdeenshire, where there exist Chalmers of Balncraig, Cults and Aldbar. These families generated some well known personalities. Major General Sir William Chalmers had a distinguished military career, and fougth at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Dr Thomas Chalmers was a well known and influential theologian, born in 1780, he was appointed Professor of Divinity aat Edinburgh in 1828, and became important in the Free Church of Scotland after 1843, when the Church of Scotland split in two. A statue to him stands in Princes Street in Edinburgh.
