The name seems to relate to one who dwelt by a cross of some sort, possibly a market cross or a crossroads, or possibly bearer of a cross during the Crusades or in the church. The name became common around Wigtownshire and Dumfriesshire, and the Dumfries element came to prominence as followers of the Bruce family. Iuone de Cosseby witnessed a charter by Robert de Brus to Arbroath Abbey between 1178 and 1180, and the appeared regularly in charters in Annandale and Moffat during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries Andrew Crosbie, a member of the family of Holm, was a famous lawyer during the eighteenth century, and is claimed to be the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott's 'Guy Mannering'. However, the family suffered heavily during a bank crash and Andrew died poor in 1785. An Irish branch of the family were raised to Baronets in 1630, the baronetcy became extinct in 1936.
