The lands and name of Dunbar are traced to Gospatrick who was the Earl of Northumberland and was awarded the lands of Dunbar and additional land in Lothian by Malcolm III. Crinan was the powerful Lord of the Isles and was born c.975. He was the father of King Duncan I as well as Maldred. Maldred's son Gospatrick was awarded the Earldom of Northumbria by William the Conqueror in 1067 but lost it in 1072 whereupon he came to Scotland. King Malcolm gave him the lands of Dunbar and created him an Earl. The power of the Dunbars continued as the 10th Earl was one of the most influential nobles in Scotland. Dunbar fought in England at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 with the Earl of Douglas. Dunbar tried to arrange an alliance with the Earl of Rothesay through the marriage of his daughter into the family but this was prevented by the Douglases. The 11th Earl, George, adopted his title and estates in 1420 and involved himself in public affairs. The power and influence of the Dunbar family had grown to a point where James I felt that perhaps the Dunbars had too much power. Dunbar was imprisoned on charges of treason and his title and lands were forfeited to the crown. The last Earl died in England in 1455. Sir James Dunbar of Mochrum became a Baronet of Nova Scotia in March 1694, this was a baronetcy that had to be paid for as it was awarded upon a donation towards the development of the New World. The 2nd Baronet was a soldier of distinction and served in the Duke of Marlborough’s cavalry; he was recognised as the chief of Clan Dunbar after the death of Ludovic Dunbar in 1744. The 9th Baronet, Sir William Dunbar, was the Register General from 1902-1909. Clan Dunbar is still led by a chief on the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.
