Sir Robert de Erskine was appointed Lord Great Chamberlain of Scotland and justiciar north of the Fourth (1350-57). He was also appointed by David II to be constable and keeper of the strategic Royal castle of Stirling. In the mid 15th century the family claimed one of the great Celtic titles when Alexander, Earl of Mar, died in 1435. The 3rd Lord Erskine, Alexander, constructed a large tower in 1497 at Alloa becoming the chief’s seat for the next three hundred years. John 4th Earl had charge of the infant Marry, later to become Marry Queen of Scots, in Stirling Castle and Inchmahome, and conveyed her to France. She thanked him by bestowing him wit the title of the “Earl of Mar” though this caused many legal difficulties later on. His daughter was mother of the Regent Murray and his son Alexander, was the ancestor of the Earls of Kellie. In 1582, Lord Erskine took part in the raid of Ruthven placing James VI in the hands of extreme faction of the Protestant nobility for nearly a year. As a result Erskine was exiled but later restored to Royal favour in 1616 when he was made Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. The Battle of Sheriffmuir which happened on the 13th of November 1715 was inconclusive and although Mar’s forces were probably triumphant, they left the field without inflicting any serious damage upon Argyll who subsequently claimed himself victorious. Mar fled to France which resulted in the forfeit of his lands and titles. The estates were bought by another branch of the family in 1724.
