The surname Galbraith is said to come from the Gaelic for “strange” or “foreign Briton” leading us to believe that the original Galbraith probably was from the south. The original Galbraith seems to have fled from the south to live among the Gaels in the Kingdom of Strathclyde which did not become part of Scotland until 1124. Others think that the name may simply mean the "Britons son." In Gaelic the clan were known as “Clann a’ Bhreatannaich.” The first recorded chief of the Galbraiths appears in the 12th century. The Galbraiths of Bathernock, later known as Baldernock, became the main family, from whom were descended the Galbraiths of Culcreuch whose castle still stands to this day. There is some evidence that the Galbraiths were related to the Celtic Earls of Lennox, as in one charter Alwin, Earl of Lennox, referred Gillespie Galbraith as 'nepote nostro' meaning our nephew. The 12th Chief, Thomas, again took up arms with Lennox after the murder of James III in 1488. However he was defeated at Talla Moss and was consequently captured and hung in 1489. Andrew, the 14th Chief also partook with the Lennoxes when they attempted to rescue the young King James V from the Douglases in 1426. James the 18th chief was the last traceable member of the line and last known chief. It was around this time that the Galbraiths began to travel to other parts of Scotland and Ireland. Clan Galbraith has been without a chief since about 1700. In the 20th century two members of the family of Galbraith of Barskimming , cadets of Culcreuch, have served as members of parliament for constituencies in Glasgow. John Kenneth Galbraith has been one of the most influential economists of the 20th century.
