The name derives from the old Celtic princedom, which is now the district of the same name in southwestern Scotland. The name first appears in Dunbartonshire in the sixteenth century. There were other families bearing the same name who later developed on the east coast. Robert Galloway, who wrote 'poems, epistles and songs in the Scottish dialect' was born in 1752, and worked as a shoemaker before becmore a librarian and book seller in Glasgow, he died in 1794. General Sir Archibald Galloway was a distinguished soldier who served in the East India Company for thrity-five years. He was made chairman of the company in 1849. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Bath and died in 1850. The name is also specific to a rare breed of native cattle which are still found in Galloway district.
