Grierson is thought to be derived from the forename Gregor and it is conjectured that the Grierson's come from the same line as the MacGregors. There is, however, no evidence to support this theory and it is refuted by modern historians. Gilbrid MacGregor was given by the Earls of March a charter for lands at Dalgarnock in Dumfriesshire. The principal seat of the family in Lag was obtained around 1408. Gilbert Grierson was 'armour bearer' to the Earl of Douglas. He was married to Janet, daughter of Sir Simon Glendinning, whose mother was Mary Douglas, daughter of the fourth Earl of Douglas and his wife the Princess Margaret. The early fortunes of Grierson were secured through this royal connection and in 1460, Vedast Grierson built a strong tower on his lands. His son Roger, who was killed at the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1473 obtained a royal charter in 1473 confirming his lands. The Lairds of Lag followed James IV to the field of Flodden in September 1513, where they were killed in battle. The Greirsons declared their support for the child James IV during the confrontation between the Protestant lords who held him and his mother Queen Mary. The Griersons joined forces with the Maxwells in the battle of Dryfe sands in 1593 against the Johnstones. They were to become associated with terror and death due to their fierce persecution of Covenaters during the reign of James VII. The writer Sir Walter Scott drew on the life of Sir Robert Grierson, who died in 1736 for his novel Red Gauntlet. The Griersons of Chapell and Dalgoner are two other important family branches.
