The origin of this clan is uncertain but it is thought that for eight hundred years Bemersyde was continuously in the possession of the Haigs, from Petrus de Haga, the apparent founder of the clan, to the present chief the 13th Laird and 2nd Earl Haig. The family may be of Pictish origin but from the name Haga we can safely deduce that they are of Norman origin. Traditionally the clan is said to descend from Druskine, the King of the Picts who was killed at the Battle of Camelon by Kenneth, the King of the Scots in 839. In 1242, de Haga was one of the noblemen charged by Alexander II with respect to the murder of the Earl of Athol at Haddington. Although the clan Barons swore faithfully to Edward I in the Ragman roll of 1296, they nevertheless joined the struggle for Scottish independence fighting with Sir William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling in 1297. The 6th Laird, though only 17, followed the banner of Robert the Bruceto the Battle of Bannockburn. Later he was killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill in 1333. The tower of Bemersyde was originally built in 1535. It was improved in 1690 when large windows and fireplaces were introduced. The houses were extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. Earl Haig was the commander in chief of the British Expeditionary Forces in France from 1915 –1919. In 1921 Bemersyde was bought from Arthur Balfour Haig for the British Empire and presented to Lord Haig in recognition of his services to the country. The present chief is his son and heir, the 2nd Earl Haig, who was page of honour to George VI at his coronation in 1937, is a distinguished artist and an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy.
