The name Henderson in Gaelic is MacEeanruig, sometimes rendered in English as Mackendrick, and is found in widely separated districts of Scotland, but there are disputed origins to this name. One is thought to be that the Hendersons in the Borders were named “sons of Henry” and that the name is often found as a variant to Henryson. The origin of this clan is uncertain but the Hendersons claim to descend from Earuig Mor Mac Righ Meachtan - Big Henry, son of King Nectan. There is though no evidence substantiating this. Traditionally, The clan chiefs held their seats at Callart, on the North side of Loch Leven, and as late as the 15th century a chieftain of the clan held the lands of Callart. William Henderson was chamberlain of Lochmaben Castle c. 1374. He received from the King of England a pension when he was driven out of his lands in the lordship of Lochmaben. He died c. 1395. The principal family of the Hendersons was the Clan of Eanruig of Glencoe for whom it is claimed that they were in that glen of grievous memory centuries before the MacIains (Macdonalds) arrived there. Iain Fraoch married one of the Hendersons' daughters in Glencoe and their son Iain was the founder of the MacIains of Glencoe. He was called Iain Abrach from his being born in Lochaber, and the clan came to be known as the Clan Abrach. The Hendersons who were noted for their strength, always formed the bodyguard of the chief, and were the hereditary pipers of the clan Abrach. Hendersons in Caithness and the North claim to be a sept of the clan Gunn and descend from Henry, son of George Gunn "the Crowner," in the 15th century. The Hendersons of Caithness have no connection with those of Glencoe. Having established his rights before the Lyon court, the present chief is a physician and lives in Australia.
