The family name is of two possible origins. The Counts of Vendome in France bore three hedgehogs, in French 'herissons', on their coat of arms, and the name could derive from a count who crossed the channel. It could also have derived from the Anglo-Norman family of Heriz, who originated in Wyverton in Nottinghamshire and travelled to Scotland in the reign of David II. The fact that the name of William de Heriz appears on a number of charters before 1152. Seems to support this second suggestion Nigel de Heris held lands in Ettrick during the reign of Alexander II. The name of William de Herris appears along with many of the Scottish nobility on the Ragman Roll of 1296 pledging allegiance to Edward I. Herbert Herries of Terregles was arrested with the Duke of Albany in 1425, following his release he sat as one of the duke's jurors. He travelled with Princess Margaret when she went to France in 1436 to marry the heir to the throne. John Herries, Herbert's brother, was taken and hanged by the Earl of Douglas following a dispute with the family. Sir Herbert Herries, descendant of the original Herbert became a parliamentary Lord with the Title 'Lord Herries' in 1489. His son Andrew fought and died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. The third Lord Herries, William, died leaving only a daughter, and so the title continued, destined to heirs general, and was permitted to succeed through female heirs. She married Sir John Maxwell, son of Lord Maxwell, and the Maxwells incorporated the arms of Herries into their own in 1667.
