The origin of this family can be traced back to a charter signed by Robert II on the 2nd of May 1374 which confirms the grant of land to William Hunter. It is thought that he is the 10th Hunter of Hunterston. The family came to Scotland in the early 12th century during the invasion of David I. The earliest known record of this family in Scotland is of William Hunter, the 1st Laird, who is named as a witness at the Inquisition of King David I in 1116. The 16th century saw John the 14th Laird dying with the King at the Battle of Flodden. His son, Robert, was excused from the army in 1542 because of his poor health, provided that he sent his eldest son to fight for James V. In 1546, his son Mungo succeeded his father but was killed in the Battle of Pinkie in 1547. In 1643, the 20th Laird’s son, Robert, graduated from Glasgow University. One of the 20th Laird’s grandsons, Robert, became a Governor of Virginia and then of New York having previously served under Marlborough. The 23rd Laird, Robert Hunter, died at the age of 86 to be succeeded by his daughter, Eleanora. Having married her cousin Robert Caldwell, he assumed the name Hunter. He built the present Hunterston House which was altered and extended by their son in 1835. He had two daughters: Jane who married Gould Weston, and Eleanor, who married Robert William Cochran-Patrick. Jane Hunter Weston died in 1911 to be succeeded by her son, Lieutenant General Sir Aylmer Hunter-Weston. He died in 1940 and when his widow died in 1954 the estates were passed onto his mother’s younger sister Eleanora. In 1969 she passed the estate to her nephew, Neil Kennedy-Cochran-Patrick (born in 1926), who was officially recognised by Lyon Court in the name of the Hunter of Hunterston as being 29th Laird of Hunterston and Chief of Clan Hunter. Hunterston remains the family seat.
