The lands of Kinnaird lie in the district of Gowrie in Perthshire. This barony of Kinnaird was given to Radulphus, called Rufus, by royal charter in 1170. Richard de Kinnaird is listed on the Ragman Roll of 1296 as one of many Scottish nobles who submitted to Edward I of England. Sir George Kinnaird of Inchture was knighted by Charles II for loyalty during the civil war, and in 1682, he was made Lord Kinnaird of Inchture. Patrick, third Lord Kinnaird was outspoken in his oppostion to the union of the parliaments before his death in 1715. The fifth Lord, Charles died without heir after a court case proved that Lady Kinnaird had not borne the twins that she claimed she had. Lord Kinnaird attempted to save public humiliation by claiming the children had died, but the court ws disbelieving. His title was succeeded by the great, great grandson of George, first Lord Kinnaird. The seventh Lord Kinnaird, also a George, was a representative peer in the House of Lords. His brother was friendly with the poets Sheridan and Byron, and he helped to manage the Drury Lane Theatre in London. The eighth Lord Kinnaird, born in 1780, also became a representative peer of Scotland after time as a Minister of Parliament. He built Rossie Priory, the family mansion in the Carse of Gowrie. Another George, ninth Lord Kinnaird, was created Baron Rossie of Rossie in 1831. He was Master of Buckhounds to the Queen and Lord Lieutenant of Perthshire. In 1860 he was created Baron Kinnaird of Rossie. His brother was his successor, taking the titles while MP for Perth. The family still hold residence on their lands in Gowrie, where they have lived for six centuries.
