Sgian DubhThe name Livingus is certainly found in Scotland around the reign of David I. One Sir Archibald of Livingstone appears on the Ragman Roll of 1296 pledging fealty to Edward I Sir Livingstone was thought to be a direct descendant of Livingus and was the father of three sons. His eldest son was taken prisoner at the Battle of Durham, after following David II’s invasion of England in 1346. He was one of the commissioners to England who negotiated the release of the king and was thereafter granted the barony of Callendar. The young and influential James II was kept under the protection of various figures including Sir Alexander Livingstone of Callendar. After Alexander and William Crichton disagreed over the future of their young charge, Alexander decided to take the young child away from Edinburgh to his castle where he could have a greater influence. One of Livingstones’ sons found prosperity for himself as captain of the strategically positioned Stirling Castle as well as becoming the Great Chamberlain of Scotland. Although he was created Lord Livingstone in 1458 he died without the confirmation of his title which passed to his nephew, John. Alexander, the 5th Lord Livingstone served with Buchanan as one of the tutors to their young charge, Mary, Queen of Scots. Lord Livingstone faithfully served the young queen until his death. He was succeeded by his son William. He stood by the Queen at the Battle of Langside when she was finally made to surrender the throne of Scotland. By 1600 the Lord of Livingstone had received the earldom of Linlithgow; the 2nd Earl was the Hereditary Constable of the Royal Palace of Linlithgow. The lands of the Linlithgows were ravaged during the civil war by the Covenanters and Oliver Cromwell as a punishment for their loyalty to the Crown. Another branch of the family include the Livingstones of Bachuil who were the hereditary holders of the crozier of St. Molluag as well as holding a part of the island of Lismore. The clan is currently not represented on the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs.
