Clan Donald derive their origin from their ancestor Donald of Islay, who succeeded his father Reginald, Lord of the Isles in 1207, inheriting South Kintyre and the island of Islay. Chief Angus Mor, joined the Norwegian King Haco and in 1284 appeared at the convention from which the Maid of Norway was declared heiress to the Crown. Gaining her in marriage he also received a grant of Ardnamurchan. Angus Og, supporting Robert the Bruce, led his clansmen against Edward II of England at Bannockburn in 1314 and assisted in the attack upon Carrick. Accordingly, Bruce created Angus Lord of Lochaber giving him the lands of Durrour and Glencoe, and the islands of Mull, Tyree. Dying in 1330, Angus Og left two sons; John his successor and Iain from whom the Macdonalds of Glencoe are descended. Through a formal treaty in 1335, John, Lord of the Isles, supported Edward III 's pretensions. Nevertheless, when David II was recalled from France in 1341 David concluded a treaty with John who consequently pledged allegiance to the government. Donald unsuccessfully laid claim to the earldom of Ross eventually leading to the battle of Harlaw in 1411. Defeated there, Donald left the island Fastness to his son, Alexander, to successfully restate their right to the earldom of Ross. This he gained without opposition. Through the Treaty of Ardtornish with Henry VII of England, in 1462, the Lord of the Isles agreed to accept the King as overlord once James IV had been defeated. However, James acted on this and declared John a traitor in 1475, stripping John of all his titles in 1493. The clan’s various branches gradually accepted the Crown charters, recognising their separate holdings. By 1545, attempts to regain the lordship died away as the rightful heir was greatly debated. In the rebellion of 1745 the Macdonalds fought for Prince Charles Edward Stuart, and by the late 17th century, Hugh Macdonald of Sleat on Skye was recognised as Laird of Macdonald. A clan Macdonald society exists where it is based in Armadale Castle on Skye. Lord Macdonald still lives on the island and is vice-convenor of the Council of chiefs.
