The founder of this clan, Ranald, received a charter, confirmed by Robert II in 1373, regarding the greater part of the Macruari inheritance including Moyart, Arisaig and Lochaber. Consequently, Ranald actively participated in Donald’s installation at Eigg. Allan Macdonald died in Castle Tirrim in 1419 to be succeeded by his son Roderick. Roderick’s son, Allan Macruari Macdonald led a raid into Lochaber and Badenoch in 1491 and captured Inverness Castle. In 1531, John Moidarach's rule started amongst chaos since James V had annulled all the charters given to the chiefs hence retaliating with rebellion. James arrested John to replace him with Ranald Galla who occupied Castle Tirrim. When James V died in 1542, the Earl of Arran became regent to Mary Queen of Scots releasing all the imprisoned chiefs. Ranald Galla fled to Lord Lovat and was killed by John at the Battle of Blarnaleine. John was acknowledged chief of Clanranald in 1584. Being supporters of Charles I, Clanranald played an important part in Montrose’s great victory at Invverlochy in 1645, also following Montrose in his other victory at Kilsyth. Allan, 14th chief, succeeded Donald in 1686 later leading his clan to join Viscount Dundee to fight for James VII. Forced to flee to France, he returned in 1715 to join the Jacobite cause and was created Lord Clanranald. Killed at the Battle of Sheriffmuir 1715 without issue, his brother Ranald succeeded him but, exiled in France, died at the court of Saint Germain in 1725. Ranald, 16th chief, was famous during the rising of 1745 and his son, Young Ranald, supporting Prince Charlie, led the clan out for him. After Culloden, Young Ranald escaped to France but returned to Scotland in 1754. In 1810, Reginald George Macdonald was recognised in Lyon Court as Chief of Clanranald. His son, Admiral Sir Reginald Macdonald, 20th of Clanranald, was commander-in-chief at Sheerness in 1882. Young Ranald’s line became extinct in 1944, passing the chiefship to Alexander Macdonald of Boisdale, one of the 17th chief's younger brother. The present chief, Ranald Alexander Macdonald captain of Clanranald, was recognised by the Lord Lyon in 1956.
