A name from Galloway in the south-west of Scotland.
The Lords of Galloway were powerfull scattering their princedom with abbeys and priories. Fergus of Galloway, who flourished during the reign of David I, appears to have divided his princedom between his sons.
One of which was called Dougal. John Balliol as Lord of Galloway granted a charter of the lands of Garthland to Dougal in 1295.
In 1296 Dougal and Fergus M’douall appear on the Ragman Role swearing fealty to Edward I of England.
Dougal’s grandson, Fergus, 3rd of Garthland was sheriff depute for Kirkcudbright in the reign of David II. His grandson Sir Fergus MacDowall, the 5th Laird was taken prisoner at the battle of Homildon in 1401.
Uchtred, 9th of Garthland, married Isabel Gordon of the branch of thet great family that controlled Lochinver. Uchtred and his son were both killed in the slaughter at Culloden in 1513.
John the 11th Laird was killed at the battle of Pinkie in 1547. Uchtred the 12th Laird of Garthland was implicated in the Gowrie conspiracy when the Earl of Gowrie and other protestant nobles kidnapped the young James VI and held him at Ruthven Castle.
The king escaped and although it is not known what part Uchtred played in the conspiracy it was sufficient for him to require a royal pardon in 1584.
