The clan Iver, also known as Clan Iver Glassary, from Glassary in Argyll, are of ancient heritage taking its name from the Gaelic Maciomhar, meaning son of Ivar. In 1292 the lands of Malcolm McIuyr and others in Lorne were erected into the sheriffdom of Lorne by Act of Parliament. McIan states that Iver was a son of Duncan, Lord of Lochow, and therefore the Macivers were part of the progeny from which was to spring the mighty Clan Campbell. Around 1500 Iver Mciver of Lergachonzie was chief of the clan. He had three sons; Duncan, Charles and Iver Ban. In 1572 Duncan, chief of Asknish and Charles’ son, was captain or keeper of Inverary Castle. Charles’ son, Iver, was forfeited in 1685 for his part in the rebellion by Archibald, 9th Earl of Argyll. His cousin, Charles, the Laird of Ballochyle, is said to have used the names Campbell and Mciver quite indiscriminately. Thereafter the fortunes of the Mcivers were largely those of the great house of Argyll and they followed Campbell interests throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. It is suggested that it was after the restoration of the Campbell fortunes and after the defeat of James VII and II in 1690, that the Earls of Argyll imposed upon the Mciver supporters the condition that they adopt the surname Campbell in return for their forfeited estates. Other families of Mcivers assumed the name of Campbell. The Mcivers in the Gairloch region descend from a Mciver from the Argyll area, some of the Macivers of this area remained Mcivers while others changed their name to Campbell. There is now an active Mciver society which has established its headquarters at Strathendry Castle in Fife, and which seeks to promote awareness of the distinctive character of the name.
