The Gaelic version of Maclean is 'MacGille Eoin' which means, 'son of the servant of St. John'. Despite the various spellings of the name, the Macleans are descended from 'Gillean of the Battleaxe' who was, in turn, descended from the royal house of Lorn. Gillemoir Macilyn was recorded on the Ragman Roll of 1296, pledging allegiance to Edward I along with many nobles of the time. Iain Dhu Maclean, Gillemoir's great grandson, established himself in Mull. His son, Lachlan Lubanach beame the founder of the Macleans of Duart and his son Hector became the progenitor of the Maclaines of Lochbuie. Sir Lachlan Maclean became a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1631. He remained loyal to Charles I and fought with Montrose. He was succeeded by his son Hector in 1649 who lost his life two years later at the Battle of Inverkeithing. He was succeeded by his young brother Alan who died in 1674 to leave another young heir. By 1697 the Campbells had gained possession of Duart as well as most of the Maclean estates due to the fact that the Macleans were so heavily in debt and forced to sell their lands. The Macleans were loyal to the Stuarts and the 5th Baronet, Sir John, fought for James VII at Killiecrankie in 1689. Maclean of Drimmin took charge of the clan during the '45; he died during the charge at Culloden. Duart Castle could not be maintained and fell to ruin. The 8th Baronet became a general, the 19th baronet, Sir Fitzroy, fought at the Battle of Sebastopol of 1854-55. The present chief's father became the Chief Scout of the Commonwealth and was the Lord Chamberlain to HM The Queen. He consequently became a life peer as Lord Maclean of Duart. As a result the clan is still represented on the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs and there are various clan societies in existence across the world.
