The year 1988 was very significant, not only because the town of Paisley, Scotland, celebrated 500 years as a Burgh of Barony, but also because it marked the formation of The Paisley Family Society.
The Society came into being as a result of an increasing amount of interest shown by families bearing the name and the considerable amount of historical information gathered by the founder, Colonel David Paisley, who started research in 1976. He came from an Ayrshire weaving family which had been in the Kilmarnock district for nearly 200 years after moving down from Paisley c1734. The Society embraces many members of a variety of occupations & professions, including farmers, blacksmith, solicitors, teachers, estate agents, merchant seamen, clergymen, policemen, motor mechanics, electricians, builders, engineers, members of the Armed Forces and many others.
The Society is non-sectarian and non-political and seeks to attract anyone of the name of Paisley, Paisley, and other variants. The Society aims to promote a spirit of kinship and stimulate an interest in the name by carrying out research and publishing a JOURNAL each year, and arranging meetings. The Society extends an invitation to anyone of the name of Paisley, with all its variations, descended from, or having any connection by marriage, etc., to persons of the surname of Paisley/all variations.
We invite letters, queries, family and genealogical information, photos, interesting articles, historical or current, for our records and for inclusion in the JOURNAL. All information is entered into a computer database so we can aid others. We offer a limited amount of genealogical help, without cost. At present, we have accumulated a goodly amount of genealogical information on Paisley/various, from all countries and counties. |
