The ancient family of Ramsay is of Anglo-Norman origin. There are several Ramsays on record who witnessed Lothian charters in the 13th century. William de Ramsay was witness to the Coldinghame Charter in 1198 and to another in 1236. His cousin, sir Nessus de Ramsay, affixed his seal to a charter by Alexander II in 1217. Nicholas de Ramsay was witness to a charter between 1250 and 1270. William de Ramsay of Dalhousie was a member of the king’s council in 1255 during the minority of Alexander III and either his son or his grandson, also called William, signed the Ragman Roll of 1296, pledging his loyalty to Edward I of England in 1296 as Ramsay “de Dalwolsy.” William de Ramsay had at least two sons, Sir William Ramsay of Inverieth and Sir Alexander Ramsay of Dalhousie. In 1600 John Ramsay was created Earl of Holderness and Viscount Haddington by a grateful king. The Ramsays served in all the great campaigns of the 18th and 19th centuries on the Continent, in Canada and in India. The Ramsays of Balmain, whose title of “Lord Bothwell” was forfeited for treason in 1488 and later given to the Hepburns, restored their fortunes by being created baronets, first in 1625 and again in 1806. Alan Ramsay, the great 18th century poet, and his son, the distinguished portrait painter, were descended from the Lairds of Cockpen, cadets of the chiefly house. Dalhousie Castle is now a hotel, and the chief seat is Brechin Castle in Angus. In 1928, John Gilbert Ramsay inherited the title of 15th Earl of Dalhousie. He died unmarried in 1950 and was succeeded by his brother, Simon Ramsay the 16th Earl of Dalhousie. Lord Dalhousie was Governor- General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland from 1957 until 1963. He is also credited for being Lord Chamberlain to the Queen Mother.
