The name Scrymegour comes from the old English 'skrymsher', which means a 'swordsman'. The family is currently connected with the city of Dundee, however, they appear to have been long established in Fife prior to this. It is thought hat the Scrymegours are descendants of the great MacDuff Earls of Fife and may have claimed their office as standard bearer from thir early Celtic origins. It was Celtic custom for their armies to be accompanied by sacred holy relics, which were usually borne by a hereditary keeper and the Scrymegours may have carried such a relic. On 29th March1298, they were confirmed as banner bearers by Sir William Wallace and Parliament.
