There is some debate over the exact origins of the name Turnbull. Legend states that a native of the Borders, Rule, literally turned a bull as the beast attempted to attack Robert the Bruce, and was awarded the name Turnbull as reward as well as lands which were named "bedrule" after their owner. It is more likely however that the name derives from the old English "Trumbald" meaning "strong" or "bold". The presence of three bulls heads on the family arms may support the legend, or may simply be a pun. The family did certainly originate from the borders and held lands throughout. William Turnbull was awarded the lands at Philliphauigh by Robert the Bruce, and John Turnbull received the lands of Hundleshope from David II. John Turnbull who was renowned for his vicious temper was nicknamed 'out with sword', and around 1400 was listed as a Scots prisioner of war in England. William Turnbull, Bishop of Glasgow, was awarded permission to establish a university in the city in 1450, and in 1451 the University of Glasgow was founded. Herbert Turnbull was widely regarded for his contributions to algebraic mathematics, he died in 1961.
