During the fourteenth century, the sons of Watt (abbreviation of Walter), held lands in Edinburgh. Sir Donald Watsone is recorded in the records of diocese of Moray in 1493. Thomas Watson of Stenhous sat on an inquest held at Dunipace near Falkirk in 1426. Another Thomas Watson, this time of Cupar in Fife, ancestor to Sir John Watson was the first baronet in 1895. During 1918, in the midst of the First World War, the third Baronet was killed serving with the 16th Lancers. His brother, George Watson, was his successor and also held position as sheriff of Wigtownshire between 1891 and 1925. His son, James, was town clerk of Nairobi from 1911 to 1926. One of Edinburgh's leading schools is George Watson's College.
