The redpipe gallega is a model with a blowpipe.
The bag has to be filled with air over the blowpipe, just as with traditional bagpipes. The air disappears through
a built-in valve, which leads to a rather realistic rhythm of playing. The blowing effort, which is necessary to play the instrument is customizable. So, it is up to the player to decide, which level of comfort he’d like to have.
The bourdons/drones, the chanter and the overblowing function are pneumatically controlled by pressing the bag. The amount of pressure, which is necessary to get the instrument going is adjustable to individual needs. So, the instrument can be played without applying a lot of pressure to the bag.
Fingering
open, half open – Scottish bagpipe (GHB), chromatic, vibrato, Shepherd's pipe/french bagpipe, Huemmelchen and Dudey, Renaissance, medieval bagpipe in minor and Gaita Gallega.
Sounds
Scottish Highland Bagpipe (GHB), Smallpipe, medieval bagpipe and Gaita Gallega. The sound is sampled from the original pipes. The sounds are microprocessor controlled and are modified along the keys.
Real Bagpipe Sound
With a traditional bagpipe the tone is in the beginning and the end of a tune a bit lower depending on the appropriate air pressure in the bag. This typical characteristic of a traditional bagpipe is part of the redpipe functionality.
Key
Keys can be modified in halftone steps.
Pitch
The factory setup of the redpipe is A 440 Hz . If modifications are necessary, while playing together with other instruments, the redpipe can be adjusted.
The pitch setting is global and does not depend on what instrument has been chosen. Keys can be switched and the total setup is still consistent with other instruments.
Intonation
Bourdun instruments like bagpipes are normally just scale tuned. For studio recordings and for playing together with well tempered tuned instruments a switch to the well tempered scale is mandatory. The capability to switch from just scale to the well tempered scale is a standard feature of the redpipe.

The basic pitch is switched together with the fingering table.

Bourdun fine tuning
The bourduns can be tuned. The tone level can be adjusted to the chanter. The sound volume of the bourduns
can be tuned as well.

Overblowing
All redpipes can be overblown by 1/2 Oktave by opening the upper thumb hole or by putting more pressure
on the bag.
Vibrato
Realistic vibrato playing has been implemented.
Modes
The mode of a Scottish Bagpipe is myxolydic, which means that 2 tones are missing to play non celtic tunes.
That is why the redpipe is switchable between the mixolydic and the ionic mode.
The mixolydic mode
is one of the old, authentic modes used in church music. Half tones are between the third and fourth step and the sixth and seventh step of the scale. The rest of the intervals are full tone steps. Characteristic for these scales is the small seventh. All the other tones are major scale like.
Ionic mode
has been added to the authentic modes in the 16th century by Glarean. The ionic mode is the origin of all major scales with halftones between the third and fourth step and the seventh and eighth step. The rest of the intervals are full tone steps. Characteristic for these major scales is the big third.
Metronome
The metronome is a redpipe built-in feature. The selected beat generates respective sound clicks.

Outs
Line out
The line-level is not controllable. External audio equipment or a radio transmitter are connected over a
6,35mm jack.
Earphones
Standard earphones are connected over a 2,5mm jack. The sound volume is adjustable.
Appropriate for monitoring on stage.
MIDI
A standard MIDI cable is necessary to connect the redpipe to MIDI equipment, e.g sound generators, sequencers, and Personal Computers.
The redpipe uses the MIDI-channel 1 for chanter data and the channels 2 to 4 for the drones data.
